About Bob Valentine

Robert James Valentine was born in Buffalo, New York. He was the fifth of nine children; he was born on the fifth day of the fifth month of 1950 – he told people that five was his lucky number.

Bob grew up in Elma, a rural township in upstate New York. With his siblings, he raised a calf, “Bucky,” as a pet. He played the clarinet in the school band. He was a star athlete in high school football, track and wrestling, and acted in the community theater. He nearly burned down the family home playing with fire, and he had a stuttering speech impediment. He caught crawdads in the creek that run through the family property, and he harbored a runaway child for months without detection, sneaking him leftover food from dinner.

Following an argument with his mother, Bob took his father’s Lincoln and left home. He lived in the car and worked as a dishwasher at the Howard Johnson Hotel in Annapolis, Maryland for several months. Bob wanted to finish school, but didn’t want to return home, so he pitched a tent on the banks of Tonowanda Creek, where he lived while he attended classes during his senior year of high school. He was comfortable there, throwing outdoor parties for his friends. Eventually, the police warned his mother that they planned to arrest him, so she visited him at his campsite and convinced him to come home.

When he left Elma, Bob quickly developed confidence and independence. He was attractive and charismatic. His stuttering vanished. He attended college in New York State and Nevada before graduating with a degree in business administration from the University of Denver.

Remembering Bob

“Bob Valentine was a man who lived his life based on personal values and principles. He believed that success, both personally and professionally, is always achieved through valuing others and helping others excel. He always put the needs of others above his own. He was passionate about learning and as such, was a perpetual student. He was just as passionate about providing opportunities for others to learn and devoted a majority of his career in helping develop others. He always looked for the good in everyone and truly valued the relationships that he developed.

Bob was a very gentle man who was liked by all who knew him. As a friend or as a colleague, you could always count on Bob to do whatever he could to be helpful and supportive. And, he was just a great person to be around. His great sense of humor, his humility and his well grounded and value centered convictions all combined to make him the wonderful person that he was. He was very respected by all who came to know him and his leadership at Towne Park will never be forgotten. He played a key role in shaping the company into what it is today.”
